Charlton will have keeper Ben Hamer available for Monday’s game against Brentford after appealing against his sending off on Saturday.

Dean Whitestone has indicated that Hamer was sent off for denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity rather than deliberate handball.

However, as Hamer did handle outside the area, it is difficult to see that there are grounds for the decision to be overturned. The club may feel that with Conor Gough and Nick Pope both out on loan, it is worth the risk of having the ban increased to have two senior keepers available for the Brentford match.

Here are Chris Powell’s thoughts on the decision:

“I’m disappointed to lose a game in any circumstances but I feel we have been hard done by.

“I’m very proud of my players and the effort they put in for 85 minutes, and we could have got something at the end.

“Obviously Orient had chances but so did we and we could have nicked a point.

“I’m very proud of the way they applied themselves in real difficult circumstances,” said Chris before agreeing with a suggestion that Hamer’s red card was harsh, “Absolutely. The referee has made a decision, no problem.

“First of all it’s a bad decision by my keeper to put himself in that position. What I would say if you are a yard or two yards away from the attacker you are not going to put your arm behind your back.

“He’s put them up and its hit him on the upper part of his of arm and his chest. Is it a goalscoring opportunity? I don’t think so. He’s made the decision and we’ve got on with it.”

Hamer did raise his arms, was outside the area and his upper arm did make contact with the ball, leaving the referee with no option but to send the keper off. Far more unlucky was the incident that led to what proved to be the winning goal. Matt Taylor’s attempted block of Matthew Spring’s shot deflected the ball over John Sullivan. Powell continued:

“We just spoke about that in the changing rooms that the two defeats have been two deflections, and I know with a full compliment of players we will always make chances and be in the game and even with ten men we were today.

“It’s disappointing in that respect but at the halfway stage of the season I’m very pleased with their efforts and what they have shown me and all their supporters and everyone so far.”

As well as having to deal with two matches in three days, Powell brought Leon Clarke in from Swindon on Saturday. Paul Benson finally departed The Valley in a straight swap deal. Clarke, who has been on loan at Chesterfield after falling out with Paolo Di Canio, has scored nine goals in fourteen games for the Spireites. Clarke has signed a contract at The Valley until the end of the 2012/13 season. Powell had this to say about his new acquisition:

“He’s a striker who has scored a lot of goals this season in League One for a team that is down the bottom.

“I just felt it was an opportunity with one striker going out to just keep my squad numbers the same.

“It’s now down to him to prove to us that he can be in the sixteen and eventually be in the team but he knows he’s going to have to work hard to do that because we have some good players here.

“He comes into the mix now and we will see how it goes,” concluded the manager.

Clarke is available for the Brentford game and has been given the number 40 shirt.

Two games in less than 48 hours is far from ideal so Powell will have to assess if any of his players need to be rested. Johnnie Jackson, after six weeks out with a hamstring problem, may not be risked if Hogan Ephraim recovers from his illness.

Danny Green is available again and Scott Wagstaff had the briefest of cameo’s on his return to the starting line-up.

Brentford will be buoyed after their dramatic late comeback from a 3-0 deficit to snatch a draw against in-form Milton Keynes Dons. A tough afternoon beckons and Powell may opt for this team:

Hamer; Solly, Taylor, Morrison, Wiggins; Green, Russell, Hollands, Ephraim; Kermorgant, Wright-Phillips.

Subs: Sullivan, Cort, Wagstaff, Jackson, Clarke.

The referee will be Graham Scott from Oxfordshire
